belt vs. PTO driven hydraulic pump. Pros & Cons 2010-09-21
I am looking for some real world advise on the pros and cons of an engine driven Hydraulic pump vs a high speed tranny mounted PTO pump found on a SBU.
I understand the issue of clutch engagement shutting off the pump with a PTO driven pump, vs always live hydraulic power with a engine/belt driven set up.
Personally I only foresee running a bed dump cylinder, maybe a trailer mounted knuckle boom crane and lift cylinders for the roof of a camper. All of these items would be stationary actions. I don't foresee any mowers or back hoes in my future and as sweet as a plow would be, I doubt I'll see one in my future living in Albuquerque.
If I was to run a hydraulic winch, I understand a belt driven set up would be the way to go, but is this the only real advantage to this set up if all other applications are stationary?
If I was to go with a belt driven pump, would the PTO on my truck be capable of running a front mounted PTO winch, with a direction reverser of course.
