Desiccant Air Dryers 2009-02-24

Compressed air dryers remove moisture from compressed air systems to protect downstream equipment. When moisture persists in a compressed air system it leads to the formation of scale, rust, bacteria and water. These contaminants can damage compressed air system equipment, ruin product batches, and contaminate pharmaceutical or food products.

Desiccant compressed air dryers run the compressed air through a chamber filled with desiccant, usually activated alumina or silica gel. The desiccant adsorbs the moisture in its millions of pores, trapping it. If the air dryer is using a smart controller the compressed air dryer changes chambers once the dew point downstream begins to change indicating the desiccant is wet other models change on a set timer. The wet desiccant is regenerated or dried by the compressed air dryers hot purge air. The hot air drives off the moisture preparing the desiccant for its next cycle.

Most compressed air dryers are designed to provide a -40°F dew point because experience has proven a -40°F dew point eliminates the growth of bacteria and is sufficient to prevent freeze-ups.
